This Saturday, April 20, the latest Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival meeting will take place at Sydney’s iconic Royal Randwick Racecourse with Doncaster Mile Day to host a double shot of Group 1 racing.
Racing at Randwick kicks off this weekend at 11:45am (AEST) and continues right through until Race 9 brings the action to a close at 4:52pm (AEST).
While not quite as an explosive line-up of Group races as last weekend’s Australian Derby Day, there are still plenty of talented gallopers engaged to run across the events especially those in the two elite levels.
The first of the Group 1 features will be the three-year-old fillies facing off in the $550,000 Patinack Farm Australian Oaks (2400m) – Race 7 at 3:35pm (AEST) – where New Zealand Derby winner Habibi in gate three is the $3 favourite at bookmaker.com.au.
Habibi debuted down under on Golden Slipper Day at Rosehill Racecourse and ran a good third behind Norzita and Longport and will be hard to beat getting back up to the 2400m this weekend.
The Kiwi raider is one of five single-figure fancies in the latest Australian Oaks betting odds with other top chances being last weekend’s impressive Adrian Knox Stakes champ Royal Descent ($5), last spring’s Crown Oaks winner Dear Demi ($5.50), Vinery Stud runner-up Longport ($6) and another New Zealander More Than Sacred ($9.50) who was last seen winning the NZ Oaks back home.
Following the Australian Oaks is then Randwick Racecourse’s marquee event for the meeting, the $2 million Group 1 BMW Doncaster Mile (1600m) to run as Race 8 at 4:15pm.
2013 Doncaster Mile betting is firmly led by Gai Waterhouse’s impressive colt Pierro ($2.50) who comes off three wins this time in including the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes – George Ryder Stakes double.
Of course the mile under handicap conditions where the three-year-old must carry 57kg against a bumper 20 horse field is going to test Pierro and some punters may be looking a little further down the markets for their pick.
Just two of Pierro’s rivals are under $10 to score an upset with Vinery Stud Stakes winning filly Norzita ($8.50) and the flying Appearance ($9) after her third on the trot having won the Group 1 Coolmore Classic and Queen Of The Turf Stakes at her two most recent runs.
Other notable hopes at generous Doncaster Mile odds then include Shoot Out ($14), Solzhenitsyn ($17) and Streama ($17).
The other major support race on the Doncaster Mile Day card is then the $100,000 Listed Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) where Kelinni and Hoylonny are the top fancies in what has proven to be a nice Sydney Cup lead-up.
Kelinni is currently heading the futures markets for Saturday week’s $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), also running at Royal Randwick, and will firm in those markets with a win this weekend.
Found below is the complete Doncaster Mile Day race program including jump times and the latest betting favourites in each race so you know who the punters are picking.
