Set to feature a a triple shot of elite level racing action, Australian Derby Day is one of the premier race days of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

The day’s official headline event is the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) due to run as Randwick Race 7 at 3:50pm (AEST).

This year’s Australian Derby field has drawn just 10 three-year-olds with the clear cut favourite being Murray Baker’s ace Kiwi raider It’s A Dundeel.

Paying $1.25 in the latest Australian Derby odds the youngster is looking to complete the Sydney Autumn 3YO Triple Crown having easily accounted for his rivals in both the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas at his two most recent runs.

Also in the Australian Derby mix are then Tulloch Stakes winner Philippi ($7) on the rails in barrier one, Tulloch runner-up Hippopus ($15) from the in-form Gai Waterhouse stables and Alister Clark Stakes winner Hvasstan ($17) out to bounce back after a seventh in the Rosehill Guineas.

Of course the Derby is really just heating up Randwick Racecourse for the race the punters are all out to see on Saturday, the $1 million Group 1 Darley TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) where Peter Moody’s turf genius Black Caviar will look to extend her flawless record to 25 consecutive wins.

Already boasting 14 Group 1 victories the $7.3 million earner is considered Australia’s best racehorse but is out to her longest starting price in the TJ Smith Stakes odds that she’s been at in over two years – $1.10.

So which horse could beat Black Caviar? The next best fancied is The Galaxy winner Bel Sprinter ($9) while punters can get the rest of her 10 rivals at $21 or longer including the Joe Pride-trained Rain Affair ($21) and old foe Hay List ($26).

The other Group 1 feature on the Australian Derby Day 2013 program is then $500,000 Group 1 Inglis ATC Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) for the two-year-olds where Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper winning filly from last Saturday Overreach will jump odds-on favourite.
